Why support brain research?

The brain determines how we think, how we feel and who we are. While there have been many breakthroughs in recent years, researchers have a long way to go to fully unravel the mysteries of the brain.

There are about 1,000 disorders of the brain and nervous system. When a brain is damaged from disease or injury – the impact can be devastating.

Securities

Recent changes in Canadian tax law now mean that publicly-listed securities, such as stocks and mutual funds, can now be donated without paying any tax on the capital gain. A gift of appreciated securities can mean greater tax savings for the donor than an equivalent gift of cash. Donors are eligible for a tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities at market close on the date of transfer. The process is simple; your financial advisor simply transfers the securities from your account to a Brain Canada brokerage.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts can benefit the donor, the donor’s family and Brain Canada. From a simple bequest in your will to a variety of arrangements that can provide income for your lifetime, support your loved ones, and reduce tax burdens, Brain Canada is fully equipped to accept your planned gift.

Disorders of the brain are an enormous public health burden; 1 in 3 Canadians are directly impacted, as well their families, caregivers, society and the economy.

20% of Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime.

The $60 billion burden on the Canadian economy every year is more than the cost of cancer and cardiovascular disease combined.

Today, the medical and indirect (lost earnings) costs of dementia total $33 billion per year. If nothing changes, these costs will rise to $293 billion by 2040.

Why Brain Canada?

More than 90% of funding goes directly to research.

Through the Canada Brain Research Fund, every dollar is matched by the federal government on a 1:1 basis.
