Neuroscience is on the brink of a digital revolution, where vast amounts of data from diverse individuals are supporting the creation of powerful predictive models of brain disorders. These models will help clinicians understand disease mechanisms, develop new treatments, and tailor therapies to individual patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) is central to this shift, as it allows for the creation of models based solely on data rather than on preconceived theories. AI competitions are key to this progress, fostering collaboration among data scientists by sharing data and resources. These competitions have already transformed fields like cancer research and medical imaging. However, due to legitimate data access restrictions, most of the brain health data collected in Canada cannot be shared publicly, and therefore remains unusable in AI challenges, leading to a tremendous loss of opportunity. The Brain Health Data Challenge (BHDC) platform seeks to overcome this barrier by creating a framework for organizing AI competitions focused on global brain health while complying with both the letter and spirit of Canadian data privacy laws. This approach will greatly enhance the use of Canadian brain health data, accelerate collaborative research, and support the development of reliable and equitable AI models in healthcare.
