Turning Movement into a Mission for Brain Health

On Sunday, October 26th, Riverdale Farm in Toronto came alive with laughter, energy, and purpose as dozens gathered for the first-ever Functional Phil Community Walk.

At the heart of this fundraiser was Philippe Marsan, better known to his clients and community as Functional Phil. As a personal trainer, Phil lives by a powerful philosophy: movement is medicine. It’s not just about physical fitness, it’s about healing the body, uplifting the spirit, and nurturing the brain.

What started as a simple idea to bring his clients together for a meaningful challenge quickly evolved into a vibrant community event. “I couldn’t find a walk that was both physically engaging and fit our schedule,” Phil explained. “So, I thought, why not build our own?”. The walk’s scenic and challenging route was co-designed by Phil and his client Clare, a fan of brisk walks and fresh air. Together, they mapped a path through Riverdale Park, the farm, and even the historic cemetery.

Why Brain Health Matters

The walk included several of Phil’s clients, from older adults, fitness enthusiasts, and supporters of brain health. Under a clear sky, people moved together, not just for their own well-being, but for a cause that touches 1 in 3 Canadians living with a brain-related condition.

Phil’s decision to support brain research was personal and practical. “Many of my clients are older adults,” he says.

With each stride, they raised funds for groundbreaking research. Their dedication helps people in Canada live longer, healthier, and more resilient lives.

When Community Comes Together for a Cause

Phil’s story is a testament to what happens when passion meets purpose. His walk wasn’t just about fitness. It was about community, compassion, and the belief that small steps can lead to big change. By organizing his own fundraising event, he turned a simple idea into a powerful movement. Every donation, every participant, and every shared moment helped push forward groundbreaking research — one step at a time.
