The Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Program

Launched in 2019 and anchored by a generous gift from the Azrieli Foundation, The Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Program is one of Brain Canada’s flagship programs.

By supporting the next generation of Canadian neuroscientists, this unique program aims to accelerate novel and transformative research that will fundamentally change our understanding of the brain and its impact on our health.

The goal of the Future Leaders program is to reduce the social and economic burden of neurological and mental health problems on society through prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment.

Each year, a group of early-career researchers investigating a diverse range of brain disorders and diseases are selected from across Canada by a rigorous international peer review panel. Each recipient receives a two year grant of $100,000 to pursue a bold research project ultimately advancing our collective understanding of the brain.

The Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research Program has the potential to be transformative at a time when it is well recognized that there is a significant funding gap to support and retain our brightest early-career investigators.

By providing early career researchers with funding at a critical point in their careers, we can build Canada’s pipeline of future leaders.

" Close to the end of this project, I’ll be able to sit there and look at brand-new data that’s never been seen before and results that haven’t been seen before."

Introducing the 2021 cohort of Future Leaders.

" Most disorders present differently between the sexes. We need to study the differences to provide everyone with effective health care."
