Effects of Sex and Age on Nicotine Vapour Reward, Withdrawal, Pharmacokinetics, and Brain Activity

Project Overview

Dr. Hubert van Tol Travel Fellowship

The landscape of nicotine use has seen drastic change in recent years, with steady declines in cigarette smoking and dramatic increases in nicotine vaping. Though vaping likely represents a safer alternative to smoking, there are many unknowns regarding its efficacy as a tobacco replacement as well as what unique health concerns it may present. There is also specific concern among populations known to be more vulnerable to the negative consequences of nicotine, such as adolescents and women. My research focuses on understanding what effects vaping has on the brain and behaviour using advanced imaging techniques in rat models of nicotine vapour exposure.
