The Profile and Trajectory of Brain Tumours across the Continuum of Care in Ontario, Canada: A Population Based Study
Project Overview
This study will provide more in-depth information on all individuals with malignant and benign brain tumours in Ontario and their utilization of health care services at the provincial and local level. The objectives of this project are to (1) identify the number of persons with brain tumour and the associated mortality in Ontario, (2) the characteristics of these individuals, and (3) their trajectory across the health care system. Geographic variation will also be examined and comparisons will be made between benign and malignant brain tumours. This comparison is of particular importance because most cancer studies to date have focused on malignant brain tumours, however, it is important to recognize that a brain tumour of any type has negative consequences for an individual. With sufficient sample size, modeling will be carried out to identify significant predictors of brain tumours and their access to health care services. Therefore, this project identifies risk factors associated with brain tumours through examination of their demographic and clinical characteristics, can inform early detection strategies, as it has the potential to identify high risk groups (e.g., individuals living in specific areas of Ontario, types and severity of comorbidities, etc.), and can inform strategies aiming to improve the quality of life and health care services for those living with brain tumours and their family caregivers.
