Brain Awareness Week

Nearly 2 in 3 Canadians will develop a brain disease or disorder in their lifetime. It’s time to think about the brain as One Brain. Brain Awareness Week (March 16 – 22, 2026) is a call to recognize that brain health affects us all and that investing in research today will shape a healthier future for Canadians.

The brain is the one organ we cannot regrow or transplant. We must prioritize its care.”
— Ravi Menon, Chair of Brain Canada’s Research Committee

Why Brain Health Matters

Brain diseases and disorders represent one of the greatest health challenges of our time.

They cost Canada more than $50 billion annually, impact national productivity, and affect families across every community. Globally, brain conditions cost more than cancer and cardiovascular disease combined.

Despite this, brain conditions have historically been studied and treated in isolation.

But the brain does not function in silos.

Brain Canada’s One Brain approach recognizes this reality. By supporting integrated, interdisciplinary research and strategically developing research talent, we accelerate discovery across the full spectrum of brain health, from neurological diseases and mental health disorders to brain injuries and neurodegeneration.

Every breakthrough has the potential to inform the entire system. Every investment moves us closer to better prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care.

Our One Brain approach reflects the reality of how the brain functions. This integrated perspective ensures that every breakthrough informs the entire system, ultimately improving outcomes for Canadians living with brain-related conditions.”
— Viviane Poupon, President and CEO, Brain Canada

Building Canadian Research Capacity in a Shifting Global Landscape
