na’minipti’nit Discovering and honoring Inuit Research Method
Project Overview
Indigenous health research is an emerging discipline and Inuit traditional ways of knowing are not fully articulated in health research practice, due to the impacts of colonization. Natsilingmiut Inuit travel, gather and harvest food, live and care for our families on the land. We pass on stories that serve to protect us, increase our ability to thrive and inspire us to improve on what we know. Our way of life contributes to our wellness and our language and culture create sustainability. Through meaningful involvement of Inuit community members and scholars we can better come to understand the relationships between health research method and improved health and wellness for Inuit. My approach is to frame the work using the values of the community and with whole family involvement. Working with Elders and community members to define Inuit research method and demonstrate how it can contribute to Inuit research excellence.
