Novel Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Paradigm to Reduce Cortical Hyperexcitability in Patients with ALS
Project Overview
ALS is a devastating neurological disease characterized by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons leading to paralysis and death. Although the exact cause of ALS remains unknown in the majority of patients, abnormalities in the motor cortex of the brain can be detected early in the disease and may be driving motor neuron degeneration. In this study, we aim to use a non-invasive technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation which applies magnetic pulses to the brain and can reduce abnormal motor cortex activity. In this way, the normal neurochemical balance of the brain can be restored and may lead to a slowing of disease progression.
