The SLEEP HUB: an open science ecosystem for transforming sleep research

Project Overview

The SLEEP HUB is an innovative platform aimed at advancing sleep research and fostering collaborations at various levels—local, national, and international. Developed by the Centre for Advanced Research in Sleep Medicine (CARSM) located in Montreal, it integrates three key resources: the Nights Bank, the Canadian Sleep Research Biobank, and the Snooz Toolbox. These resources provide a vast collection of samples and data, including over 50,000 biological samples and sleep recordings from 15,000 participants. The Snooz Toolbox is an open-source software designed for sleep analysis, and is currently in beta-testing. The main objective of the present project is to develop a more integrated platform that will facilitate access to biological samples, sleep recordings and sleep analysis tools.

The platform will offer several services and capabilities. It will allow access to polysomnographic recordings and biological samples (e.g., blood) that can be shared with researchers, facilitating analyses on large samples or rare sleep disorders. Through the Snooz Toolbox, researchers can analyze sleep data using cutting-edge algorithms and create their own analysis tools. Additionally, the platform will integrate a portal to make metadata, procedural information and analysis tools accessible to users. The SLEEP HUB will be a main platform for the Quebec Sleep Research Network and will be accessible to researchers across Quebec, Canada, and worldwide.

The platform’s impact on neuroscience research is significant, particularly in sleep disorder research, where it will attract collaborations from academia and industry. By providing a robust infrastructure, the SLEEP HUB aims to transform our understanding and treatment of sleep disorders, which will benefit cognitive, physical and mental health.
