ALS and Medical Assistance in Dying

Projet en cours

Project Overview

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) was legalized in June 2016 in Canada and now allows patients suffering from a “grievous and irremediable medical condition” like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to access another end-of-life treatment option. According to current data, ALS is a relatively frequent reason for MAiD request, yet there is limited evidence describing the characteristics of these patients, especially in Canada. The objectives of this retrospective cohort study is to report the demographics, the contexts of request, and the outcome of patients with ALS who requested MAiD. The medical files of all eligible patients treated between 2016 and 2026 at London Health Sciences Centre will be analyzed. The results will be compared with those obtained in Quebec city, and we hypothesize that they will be similar. Ultimately, by collecting these data, it will help target the issues warranting further attention and investigation to improve care for patients with ALS.
