The protein fragment beta-amyloid has long been a key suspect in Alzheimer’s disease.

People with dementia are at a high risk for falls which are a leading cause of injury and can contribute to loss of independence and quality of life.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a form of dementia which impairs the ability to understand spoken and written language but other cognitive skills (including memory) remain intact for several years after its onset.

Dr. Belzil began her research career as a PhD student at the Université de Montréal under the guidance of world renowned geneticist and Director of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, Dr. Guy Rouleau.

For this project, Dr. Park will examine how abnormalities in RNA binding proteins (RBPs) – in particular, one called Matrin 3 (MATR3) – can lead to ALS. MATR3 was discovered to be a genetic cause of ALS in 2014 and has yet to be studied in any detail.

This project will focus on unique roles of FUS (an ALS gene/protein) at the junction where neurons connect, called the synapse.

For this project Dr. Sanjay Kalra and his team aims to improve on current techniques to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a readily available way to examine if a potential new treatment is working to slow down progression of ALS.

Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by social/communication deficits and repetitive behaviours.

Dr. Peter McPherson, professor at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University will receive one year of support to work on the connection between the most prominent known cause of ALS, a mutation in a gene called C9ORF72, and a previously unrelated critical cellular function called endosomal membrane trafficking.

Motor neurons are extremely complex cells. Not only do they have an intricate set of inner workings, but they have a long wire-like portion called an axon that connects the central nervous system to muscles called an axon.
