One of the most important questions of biomedical research is “why do we ail as we age?”.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and schizophrenia (SZ) are two psychiatric conditions that affect approximately 2% of the general population. Genetic studies have identified mutations in hundreds of genes associated with ASD and SZ.

To improve outcomes in brain cancer, better tools are needed to diagnose brain cancer, surgically remove brain tumours and monitor how they respond to therapy.

Malignant gliomas, including oligodendrogliomas (OD) and glioblastomas (GBM), are currently incurable brain tumours with few effective treatment options.

Ion channel (IC) proteins are known to be involved in different human diseases such as heart and brain disorders.

Brain metastasis occurs in 20% to 40% of all cancer patients and impacts quality of life and survival. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), which involves delivering high doses of radiation to the tumour, is the preferred treatment for these patients.

The project provides state of the art mouse brain imaging to researchers in Canada working on models of neurodevelopmental disorders.

The overarching aim of Ms Morena’s research is to investigate the role of the endocannabinoid system in the modulation of memory processes and its interaction with stress and emotional arousal in animal models of cognition, at a cellular, circuit and behavioural level.
