Mapping Prodromal Brain Iron in Isolated Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder to Forecast Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a sleep condition where people physically act out dreams because the normal muscle “paralysis” of REM sleep is lost. It is confirmed by an overnight sleep study with video monitoring. iRBD matters because it is one of the strongest known early warning signs for future synucleinopathies (brain diseases linked to abnormal buildup of the protein alpha-synuclein) especially Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) (and less often multiple system atrophy, MSA).

Access is Not Enough: the Redesigning Effective aNd Equitable systems of care for Women’s heart-brain recovery (RENEW)

Heart disease and stroke are major causes of illness among women in Canada, yet many women do not fully benefit from existing cardiac and stroke rehabilitation programs. Women are less likely than men to be referred to rehabilitation, but even when they attend, current rehabilitation care delivery systems are not designed to consider women’s unique biological, mental health, and social needs that critically impact recovery trajectories. The RENEW Network was created to address these gaps and to re-design heart and brain rehabilitation to better meet the needs of women from diverse backgrounds across Canada.

Remote ischemic conditioning to mitigate neurodegeneration in Alzheimer Disease

We need new ways to treat Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). People with AD are keen to try non-drug therapies but none are approved for treating AD. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is a non-drug therapy that involves inflating and deflating blood pressure cuffs repeatedly in the arm or leg.

Dysphagia Cooking Club: Creating Safe and Culturally Meaningful Meals for People Living with Dementia and Their Caregivers

Many people living with dementia develop swallowing problems, which can make eating unsafe and stressful for families. Caregivers are often left to manage these challenges with little guidance, especially when trying to prepare foods that are both safe and culturally meaningful.

Transforming Recovery of Global Cardiac Arrest Induced Neurological Injury (REGAIN)

Every year, more than 80,000 Canadians experience cardiac arrest—a sudden event where the heart stops beating without warning. Thanks to advances in emergency care, we have become better at restarting the heart. Today, however, survival depends more on the brain than on the heart alone.

Restoring Hippocampal Disinhibition to Reverse Early Memory Deficits in Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease can affect memory and thinking by changing how brain cells communicate. Our project looks at early changes in the hippocampus, a part of the brain important for learning and memory.

Building humanized brain models for the study of direct lineage reprogramming in Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease causes memory loss due to progressive brain damage. Current treatments only offer modest symptomatic relief, highlighting the need for new approaches.

Drawing Meaning: AI‑Enhanced Annotation and Cognitive Feature Extraction from Clock Drawing Tests

The clock drawing test is a simple, familiar task — patients are asked to draw a clock — that doctors have used for decades to check for memory and thinking problems. Today it is usually scored only as a pass or fail, even though the drawing holds far richer clues about a person’s thinking skills. Our project, Clock2Vec, uses artificial intelligence to read a photo of a hand-drawn clock and identify specific patterns of errors.

Restoring Cerebrovascular Health in Alzheimer’s Disease by Targeting Molecular Damage in the Neurovascular Unit

Alzheimer’s disease is linked to the build-up of harmful proteins in the brain and damage to brain blood vessels. In many people, especially in later life, this build-up happens because the brain cannot clear these proteins effectively. Our research focuses on understanding how aging damages the blood vessels in the brain and reduces this natural cleaning process.

Significance of native PEG-PLGA nanoparticles in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease pathology

At present, there is no effective treatment to arrest the progression of Alzheimer disease (AD) - the most common cause of dementia affecting the elderly. The disease is caused by accumulation of two distinct clumps of proteins in the brain called neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles formed by amyloid beta peptide and tau protein, respectively.
