Biomarkers are measurable indicators that help determine if a person may have, or be at risk of, developing a disease. Changes in the brain can start more than a decade before first clinical symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. A simple test to screen for protein biomarkers may help clinicians diagnose Alzheimer’s disease at an early stage. And the early stage is when available treatments and lifestyle changes that support brain health can be most effective. The long-term objective of this study is to develop a simple, low-cost screening tool that can detect multiple Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers. The short-term objective of this study is to demonstrate ultra-sensitive detection of two Alzheimer’s disease biomarker proteins in blood samples and generate new approaches to detect them. This research may lead to a simple and rapid biomarker protein screening tool that could help clinicians diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.
